Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award 2021

We would like to congratulate Joanna M. Gonçalves, of CIMA (University of Algarve), who was recently awarded The Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award of the Year 2021 for her poster presentation on ‘EMERGING: Environmental Mixtures of Emerging contaminants Repercussions on Gonads and Impact of Next Generations’. This research considers how emerging contaminants can affect the reproductive system of Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), and is supported through the JPIOceans RESPONSE project. This award was created to recognize excellence in the scientific community and reward the most innovative projects designed to positively impact the health of our oceans.

Joanna recently co-authored RESPONSE’s third project publication with Maria João Bebianno entitled, ‘Nanoplastics Impact on Marine Biota: A Review’ which is available via our Publications page.
