RESPONSE Publication

We are delighted to announce the publication of our second RESPONSE paper in Nature Research: Scientific Reports. This paper was co-authored by Ricardo Beiras (UVigo) and Alexander M. Schönemann (UVigo), and presents results on how Currently Monitored Microplastics Pose Negligible Ecological Risk to the Global Ocean.

As part of this study the author’s conducted an ecological risk assessment of microplastics in the global ocean by comparing the thresholds of biological effects with the probability of exposure to those concentrations, according to plastic density data adjusted to a log-normal distribution.

This work was partially funded by the Galician Government (Xunta de Galicia) through Research Grant FEDER ED431C 2017/46, and the Spanish Government (AEI) within the frame of JPI-Oceans through the RESPONSE Project. A.M.S. was awarded with a predoctoral fellowship of Xunta de Galicia (Consellería de Educación, Universidade e Formación Profesional) ED481A-2018/289.

To learn more about this research and its exciting results, read the full paper here or on our Publications page!
